Why We Do Not Use Polyurea or Polyaspartic as Basecoats

At Carolinas Epoxy, we believe the foundation of a long-lasting concrete floor begins with a coating that has enough working time to properly absorb into the prepared concrete.

Polyurea and polyaspartic coatings cure extremely fast. While that speed makes them excellent choices for durable, UV-resistant topcoats, we do not believe they are the best choice for the basecoat directly over concrete. Their rapid cure time can limit how deeply the coating penetrates into the surface, and many one-day flooring systems are applied in very thin layers.

A basecoat should do more than simply dry quickly. It should have time to wet out the concrete, flow into the surface profile created by grinding, and establish a strong mechanical bond.

Unfortunately, some installers promote polyurea or polyaspartic basecoats mainly because the fast cure allows them to complete the entire project in a single day, collect payment, and move on to the next job. Faster is not always better—especially when the long-term performance of your floor is at stake.

Our preferred system uses a properly prepared concrete surface, a high-quality epoxy basecoat, and a durable polyaspartic topcoat. The epoxy provides the working time and bonding characteristics needed at the concrete level, while the polyaspartic topcoat provides excellent wear resistance, chemical resistance, and UV protection.

We do not build floors around the fastest installation schedule. We build them around proper preparation, proven application methods, and long-term performance.
